Matthew 1:19-21, 24-25.
“Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.’ When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.”
There is much to admire in Jesus’ legal father, Joseph. When he was commanded to take Mary as his wife and to raise the child, yet to be born, he obeyed. He was a virtuous man—gracious, honorable and faithful— who followed the Jewish laws and was well-respected. According to Jewish law, a betrothal was binding and the only way to break an engagement was by legal divorce. A woman who was caught in adultery was often put to death. Joseph refused to pass judgment, reject or shun Mary, but was merciful to her when she needed mercy. Joseph assumed the role of father to Jesus, teaching him his own trade— carpentry—nurturing, guarding and protecting Him. Joseph’s godly character stands as an example to all those entrusted with the role of a father. Today we light the second Advent candle which symbolizes “The Way” to Jesus. Joseph, through his obedience to His heavenly Father, played a vital role in raising the baby Who was the Savior of the World, the only Way to peace with God.
Heavenly Father, I pray for all those You are entrusted with the role of being a father. It is a mighty task, not for the faint of heart! But, with Your power and strength, these earthly fathers can raise men and women of God, encouraging them to follow their Heavenly Father. Today, I pray for all fathers—especially our sons-in-law who father our grandchildren—that they would be men of honor, faithful to teach, guard and protect their children. I pray all fathers would show their children The Way to Jesus and model how to become fully devoted followers of Christ. In Your Name and for Your sake I pray. Amen.
