Proverbs 16:3
“Commit your works to the LORD
And your plans will be established.”

A momentous decision had been reached. After praying about it for a year, we felt confident that it was time to sell the house we had lived in for nine years, the home where our girls completed their education, and my husband retired from his twenty-year military career. It was obvious to us that the door to outreach in this area had closed. So after an exhaustive search, we found our next home in a relatively new area about five miles up the road.
Before we signed on the dotted line, my husband and I took a slow drive through the neighborhood, asking God to confirm in our hearts if we should proceed. Admiring each beautiful, stately home we passed, I turned to him and asked, “Are we doing the right thing? Is this neighborhood ‘out of our league?’” His response was, “These people need Jesus, too.” Those words washed all doubt away. That house would be our home for eighteen years, a place where the Lord used us to love countless folks in His name, and from which New Life was introduced to many.
How often do we get ahead of God by proceeding with our plan and then asking Him to bless it? If we admitted it, probably every single day! How much more blessing He has for us when we first commit our plans to Him.
Dear Lord, we acknowledge that we get ahead of You, moving prematurely into areas that haven’t been properly prepared by You, and then we wonder why things aren’t going as we expected. Forgive us for going our own way. Guide us in our prayers that each day we would commit our plans to You first, trusting You to establish them. For Your sake, I pray. Amen.
